Dated 1916 Chandler & Co Silk Evening Gown with Silk Tulle and Sequin Overlay
Foxtrot the night away while the smell of hyacinth lingers in the air in this magnificent World War I era evening gown. This beautiful piece of history was made by Chandler & Co in Boston, Massachusetts for Miss D. Lawson on Dec. 29, 1916. Perhaps this was her New Year's Eve frock?
The under dress is fashioned in a luxurious black silk. The over dress is constructed of a soft black silk tulle and accented with black sequins. The dress straps are made of silk velvet. A large 2.25-inch faceted glass-and-bead applique with dangling 5-inch black beaded tassel hangs from the right bustline.
Label: Chandler & Co., 151 Themont St., Boston, Massachusetts. Made for Miss D. Lawson on 12/29/16.
There are a few tiny holes and a few discoloration spots in the tulle. There are a few sequins missing under the arms due to rubbing, but could easily be replaced. Some of the velvet on the shoulder straps have been crushed. Despite these slight cosmetic flaws, the gown is in great wearable condition.
