The boater has been a symbol of of social status since the 1820s. Derived from the flat top caps of 19th century sailors, this resilient summer hat established itself as an item of leisure wear for both men and women in the late 1800s. The boater reached the height of its popularity between 1880-1930, with a resurgence following World War II. Today, it still remains an iconic summer topper for the distinguished gentleman.
